The 2024 Golden Globes have named their winner for best film actress in a comedy or musical.
In the running were Fantasia Barrino for The Color Purple, Jennifer Lawrence for No Hard Feelings, Natalie Portman for May December, Alma Pöysti for Fallen Leaves, Margot Robbie for Barbie and Emma Stone for Poor Things. In the end, it was Stone, 35, who won the prize.
As Stone made her way to the stage, she got rave applause from fellow nominee Lawrence, 33, and friend Taylor Swift.
The actress began her speech by gushing over her husband, Dave McCary. The pair have been married since 2020.
"This is amazing, thank you. Dave, I have to start with you really quickly," she said. "I love you very much. Thank you for everything!"
Stone then thanked her Poor Things cast mates Willem Dafoe, Mark Ruffalo and Ramy Youssef for making "every day an absolute joy" on the film's set.

"The [film's] crew [is] incredible. Tony [McNamara], this is our third time working together. Tony, our writer," she continued. "I love getting to say this dialogue, and I love getting to horrify you with my Australian accent. You're the best Tony."
Of director Yorgos Lanthimos, Stone said: "Yorgos, I don't know what I could say to you that I haven't said to you already. But I will forever be grateful that we met. Forever. And playing Bella was unbelievable."
"I think this is a rom-com. I see this as a rom-com, but in this sense of Bella falls in love with life itself rather than a person, and she accepts the good and the bad in equal measure. And that really made me look at life differently," she added. "And that all of it counts and all of it is important. And she has stayed with me deeply, so this means the world to me. Thank you so much."

In Lanthimos and McNamara’s follow-up to their Oscar-winning The Favourite, Stone stars as Frankenstein’s monster. Her newly implanted brain is that of the unborn child she was carrying when Willem Dafoe’s scientist found her body.
Stone is both producer and star of Poor Things — and of the trippy TV series The Curse. For both in the same year, she’s earned her seventh and eighth acting nods at the Globes. She previously won the statuette in 2018 for La La Land, for which she also then took home an Oscar.
Stone was up against some equally talented actresses for the prize, including The Color Purple's Barrino.

A winner of both American Idol season 3 and a Grammy Award, Barrino, 39, has more music accolades than acting ones. Her performance as the downtrodden Celie in The Color Purple, the newest rendition of Alice Walker’s beloved novel, is changing that.
Reprising her performance in the 2005 Broadway musical, Barrino sings her heart out in the movie musical, which is executive produced by Oprah Winfrey and costars Taraji P. Henson, Colman Domingo and fellow Golden Globe nominee Danielle Brooks.

No stranger to Golden Globe voters, Lawrence, 33, now has six nominations to her name, including three victories — in just four years — for Silver Linings Playbook in 2013, American Hustle in 2014 and Joy in 2016.
Her recognition for No Hard Feelings, directed and co-written by Gene Stupnitsky, proves she’s a queen of the Globes’ comedy or musical movie categories. Opposite Andrew Barth Feldman, the Oscar winner plays a Montauk, New York local who answers an ad to date a shy high school grad.

Portman, 42, is an actress playing an actress in Todd Haynes’ May December, loosely inspired by the real-life Mary Kay Letourneau scandal.
The film — which costars fellow Globe nominees Julianne Moore and Charles Melton — marks Portman’s fifth time being recognized at the Golden Globes, where she’s taken home statuettes in 2005 for Closer and in 2011 for Black Swan.

A Finnish actress known stateside for playing Tove Jansson in the 2020 biopic Tove, Pöysti, 42, is a new face at the Golden Globes. Along with her first-time nomination there, her work in Fallen Leaves has earned festival accolades and a Satellite Award nomination.
Aki Kaurismäki’s Finnish-German rom-com showcases all of Pöysti’s charm and leading-lady charisma. She plays a woman who has a fleeting but powerful love affair with an equally lonely man (played by Jussi Vatanen).

As its producer-star who handpicked director and co-writer Greta Gerwig, only Robbie, 33, could have predicted the meteoric success of 2023 box office champion Barbie. Her bubbly yet profound leading performance as the titular Mattel doll was a shoo-in for comedy or musical movie recognition at the Globes — Robbie’s fourth nomination.
Among Barbie’s leading nine Golden Globe nods is a brand-new category: cinematic and box office achievement.
The 81st Golden Globe Awards, hosted by comedian Jo Koy at The Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles, honored the year’s top film and television series.
Barbie led the film nominations with nine total, followed by Oppenheimer with eight and both Killers of the Flower Moon and Poor Things with seven. In television categories, Succession's final season also totaled nine nominations, followed by The Bear and Only Murders in the Building, both with five nods.
