Emma Stone became a movie star in teen comedies about sex, female bodies and coming-of-age stories. She turns all those things inside out in her latest movie “Poor Things,” playing a woman whose developing mind is catching up to her mature body.
Stone’s character starts life from scratch after being brought back from the dead in a lab, “Frankenstein”-style. When first we meet Bella Baxter, she’s plonking piano keys with her bare feet and speaking in monosyllables. By the end of the film, she is graceful, eloquent and enlightened.
